Class of 2018 Reception - April 6 2014

Dear Princeton Alumni, Parents and Friends:
Please join us on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 1:00 to 4:00 for our annual Spring Reception to meet and welcome the newly admitted students from our area, and their families.

We are excited to have guest speaker John Weeren, President Tilgman’s former speechwriter, to give a talk on:

Southern Exposure: From Nova Scotia to Nassau Hall
In 1994, a young Canadian archivist stumbled on a job announcement that led to his first permanent position, an American spouse, nine years as President Shirley M. Tilghman’s speechwriter, and now the directorship of Princeton Writes – a new University-wide initiative designed to enhance non-academic communication on campus. Serendipity played a part in this, but so did the nature of Princeton, where Canadians have quietly flourished (eh). Join John S. Weeren as he reflects on the place and the people who changed his life.

This year we are inviting potential Class of '18 students who have been offered admission but may not necessarily have confirmed acceptance. Accordingly, this reception is an opportunity for us to assist the students make this important decision by putting on the Tiger charm.

The IMD Alumni Club of Canada (“IMD”) in cooperation with the Swiss-Canadian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario  (“SCCC”) and the International University Clubs of Toronto (“IUCT”) invite you to join us for a for an informative, interactive and entertaining seminar which will help you explore answers to these questions and more:
·       Does your job equal your career?
·       Do you ever wonder what separates elite performers from the average?
·       Is something holding you back from making a career transition?
·       How would your behaviour change if you viewed your career as the biggest risk in building your wealth?

The world moves quickly these days.  In particular, the corporate world has become extremely demanding and transitory as companies compete fervently to capture market share. Like it or not, thoughtful and deliberate career planning has become critical in order to thrive in this challenging environment.

Leading the seminar are John Hierlihy and Andrew Dorrington, principals at 21st Avenue Partners (http://www.21stavenuepartners.com), an innovative talent management and career consulting firm.

·       John has over 12 years of experience in career management and executive search. In addition to being a 21st Avenue partner, he is the founder of Athlete Adventures, a firm dedicated to helping professional athletes transition to a new career.  John will be speaking on how to identify and communicate your unique value proposition through a well-defined personal brand.
·       Andrew is an entrepreneur and strategist with 20 years of international business experience.  Raised in Zimbabwe, his past experience includes strategy consulting at McKinsey, investment banking at Deutsche bank and a commercial and banking law practice in London, England.  Andrew will be focusing on creating opportunity and how to leverage your business relationships.

There will be time for networking and refreshments will be served.

Guest Speaker: Professor Nicholas Turk-Browne of the Department of Psychology

Title: Why you see what you expect to see

Abstract: Our visual sense seems as simple as a camera, just reflecting back to us whatever information reaches our eyes. However, what we see is actually created in our brains -- the end result of a very sophisticated mental process. In this talk, I will focus on an important part of this process: assumptions that our minds make about the structure of the world. I will first describe how these assumptions influence visual perception and explain visual illusions. I will then discuss how these assumptions might arise from learned expectations, and how such “statistical learning” can be studied experimentally in the lab. I will finally present two examples of our research in this area: (1) a brain imaging study about how statistical learning changes the way in which information is stored in the brain, and (2) a study of an amnesic patient that helps reveal which brain structures are most important for statistical learning. Overall, my goal is to highlight some of the inner workings of the mind, as well as to suggest how they might be realized in the brain.
